The Roy Wilcox Airport is a small, public-use airport located in Chatom, Alabama. It has a single asphalt runway, 3,000 feet long and 60 feet wide, with a full-length parallel taxiway. The airport serves mostly general aviation and private pilots, with no commercial airline service.
It was named after Roy Wilcox, a native of Chatom, who served as a fighter pilot during World War II. Wilcox was shot down over France and became a prisoner of war for 13 months before being liberated by American forces. After the war, he returned home and became involved with the Chatom airport. He was instrumental in expanding the runway and bringing in additional funding for improvements.
Today, the Roy Wilcox Airport continues to serve the local community and neighboring areas, providing a crucial lifeline for emergency medical flights and supporting economic development in the region
